The basics: an IR photon emitted from the ground into an atmosphere without greenhouse gasses will head in a straight line to space, while molecules of greenhouse gasses like CO2 and H2O, as they are spinning and moving very fast, absorb and re-emit the photons in a random (or largely random) directions.
